POF/ECD

Monitoring and Evaluation to Umodzi – Mbame and Mango CBCCs respectively, whereby the attendance is so encouraging, participation and POF/ECD activities are been implemented and seems teachers at Mango are getting to that level of Umodzi although there are some factors/ challenges which always limit them to initiate more and put more efforts to achieve their desired results like, can not do extra meeting/ activities after their normal time 11am. Always need to be getting back home to do family work for survival and other factors. At both centers the implementation of POF/ECD are interesting and encouraging in terms of kids-teacher interaction, participation, support etc to promote quality care and education. Still boNGO need to make sure that this will remain consistence and work on the gaps realize in the course of our monitoring and evaluation.

Monitoring and Evaluation to other CBCCs with Umodzi Teachers( BESSIE/ ESMIE) will start this month as follows; on 14th will be at Chimwavi and on the 21st will be at Tidalirane respectively.

CLUB CHILDREN PROGRAM

Its an interesting activity as of now, looking at the participation of the kids from the ages of 9 to 14 attending the program in the afternoon. We anticipated not to have more children when we registered 35, but things turned out otherwise, and now we have 67 kids registered and almost all are coming for the activities like assisting them in school problems, games, sports etc and this has resulted to mobilize some more materials to carter for them and need to maintain this number only as a result have resolved to probably get another volunteer in the name of Veronica in order to support them well otherwise will thing other alternatives, yet to share with you people later.

We yet to establish the library with the kids, think the children should be in the forefront to administer this library, taking responsibilities, one of the ideas of the program is to assist the kids to be able to make some decision on their own through various responsibilities at the centre like this one. The other good thing is that the interaction and the participation between the kids and us teachers are very encouraging and promising. Let’s hope this will continue. Am enjoying in this program as well, looking at the good setup, participation, interaction, teachers volunteering to take this task with me and the efforts that all of us are taking in this program and also that this is not affecting our POF/ECD program in the morning, am really happy.

CBO MANAGEMENT/TIYENDE PAMODZI

Monitoring and Evaluation in business of the maize mill, things/ operations are really going on well as this is a harvesting season to those that are to harvest, because most of the farmers were hit by dry spell this season and are not harvesting much. This month end will be going to bank money and they are yet to meet and agree how much to deposit and how much to go for operations. Work relationship is still good as they are the ones doing most of the business operations. Challenge is that, how will they go on in taking much of the work as they will also be needed for other projects and also their families. They think in future they would like to employee/ get a permanent volunteer to do the transaction when the people comes for milling and the EC will just be coming at the end of the business daily to collect and transact the money with the one to be employed. They said this will enable them work for their families and accommodate to also participate in other developmental activities fully as they did with the milling man.

Agreed to have our last research at the end of the month, that’s from 28, 29 and 30 respectively to Liwonde. Remaining to plan and organize for this trip.

FEED THE CHILDREN (PARTINERS) have started visiting the CBCCs WHICH boNGO works with (15 of them) to check the standards for VITAMEAL PROVISION. This is if the CBCCs meet their standards, like having good toilets, kitchen, clean surrounding. Quality education and care goes hand in hand with good hygienic practices

NOTE:   Did not meet the EC of Umodzi-Mbame in order to look once more on the letter wrote to the DC and plan for the meeting days. Was told that the Chairman was away for family issues and that, the group is waiting for him to transact this business. WILL WAIT AND SEE, HOW THIS WILL TAKE THEM TO.  boNGO are just working partners, but the EC and the community should be in the forefront. Hope this week all will be fine.

GOSSIP: Peter is telling people that in OCTOBER the school and everything will handed over to him and will be his. The gossip has spread to the surrounding villages. We are yet to see much he can take this to.

Week 18 2008

HELO, HELLO boNGO FRIENDS

MONI, MONI ANZANGA NONSE (boNGO FRIENDS)

POF/ECD

Monitoring and Evaluation to both Umodzi-Mbame and Mango CBCCs respectively

There is consistent implementation of boNGO POF/ECD program although the two ECD centers have different characteristics when it comes to the implementation, i.e. Approach, taking on efforts, understanding, and setup. Still good participation of parents and volunteers supporting in cooking and others.

Developed a monitoring and evaluation plan with umodzi teachers and will come to effect from next month. Am particularly happy to see that our teachers have accepted to take on the program with me. Let’s hope this will continue. Still planning on how best to accommodate the other cbcc which showed interest to join boNGO POF/ECD.

CLUB CHILDREN PROGRAM

The program has started very well and it has 35 participants in total, but there still more kids showing interest. We discussed with the teachers involved in it with me to first work with this number and later consider others. Managed to get few materials for the program like books, balls, pens, exercise books from PSI and boNGO.

CBO MANAGEMENT

Umodzi- Mbame E/C advised to write a letter to the District Commissioner DC through SWO and boNGO as partners in Development regarding land issue. This has been done and this week will have to communicate with SWO and agree date for submission or meeting the District commissioner (DC). Will have to wait and see how this will turn out to be.

Mr. Gazalina met me to let boNGO know that, he has accepted the offer by E/C and promised to work effectively as he has been doing under the leadership of the EC and if anything will bne able to let boNGO know through the EC. T he new work arrangement with him and EC will start this month of May, 2008.

MAIZE MILL PROJECT/ TIYENDE PAMODZI CBO

I took a surprise visit to the maize mill project in masuku to see for myself how the operations are been done and the machine management, all is fine, but think of inviting snow link engineers once again to do refresher course on machine management and care, so that the committee should still remember their roles and responsibilities in taking care of their own maize mill project for it to last longer and benefit more from it.

And I will meet them (Tiyende Pamodzi EC) on Friday for business monitoring and evaluation and also arrange for the research trip to Liwonde in MAY monthend, which will be the last one.

PLANS

1.       Monitoring and Evaluation both at Umodzi and Mango CBCC

2.       Business monitoring and Evaluation

3.       Arranging/ facilitating EC/SWO/DC Meeting, among others.

Week 17 2008

                        MULI BWANJI ANZANGA NONSE?

POF/ECD:

Monitoring and Evaluation to both Umodzi- Mbame and Mango CBCCs, where school activities have started very well and at Mango things are really get better and better. The average attendance for the first week was at 70 at Umodzi and 59 at Mango respectively and the participation of the parents and the volunteers has been good too. Even other CBCCs have also started well too.

Have more requests from other CBCCs who would like to join boNGO POF/ECD program and are from CBCCs as follows: Matondo 76 kids,Matope 75, Chinkuyu 65, Tambala 105, Chisomo 41, John 50, Reubin 55, Kuloya 29, Jossam 30, Kuloya 29 respectively and have been hearing about boNGO POF/ECD programs and its importances from other people and their leaders decided to come for meeting and enquiries to join the program, based on their interest too. And told them to wait, need to look into our capacity if we can really accept them or not. And later inform them. Personally am looking at first concentrate to the onces we have now and be able to establish a very good Monitoring and Evaluation system with POF/ECD program teachers, try it and if it works then consider more participants. And would suggest to the new ones that, first orient them on their own about POF/ECD program and evaluate it and think of another step later. Food for thought, that’s the expansion of POF/ECD program.

Have at least developed Monitoring and Evaluation system which will start to be implemented soon with Umodzi teachers. That’s, Bessie Njiragoma and Esmie Kika will be monitoring with me to both at Umodzi, on daily basis  apart from my monitoring twice a week and to other CBCCs. at least twice a month. And will be having meetings with the parents and volunteers after the Monitoring and Evaluation sessions in the morning to theCBCCs. And are all happy about their involvement in it. BUT, I suggest considering them an appreciation for this effort they will take in the afternoons and their acceptance to this proposal. HOW DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT IT? I think if I go with them for monitoring and Evaluation twice a month, then will appreciate them with at least k500 each. IS THIS A GOOD IDEA FRIENDS? I think our teachers are very good and deserve even more than this, but also it’s a matter of consideration to all what they do in POF/ECD program. PLEASE GIVE YOUR INPUT ON THIS.

SETUP OF CLUB CHILDREN (YOUTH CLUB): This has been discussed with both teachers and E/C and start with the children who we were doing some research on their personal and family life with SIMONE. And after meeting them and also their families all were happy about this idea. Its all about helping them in their school activities, revisions, creativity, games, sports, personal and school issues discussions, debate etc which will help them to grow with full potential and be able to make good decisions on their own and be away from bad practices/ immoral from home/ their villages and make use of the centre effectively. And discuss with the teachers who would want to join me in this field so that later they can take it on, even if am not there. On Thursday we had the registration and was amazing to see that more kids came for registration not only the Normans, Flony and the friends etc but they inform their friends too who are interested. We registered 31 and oriented them, get their feeling and all was good, what they think would be doing, how, are they happy? Other expectations, not bad. Next it’s to have the list of activities for the children. The program will be running  twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday when I go for Monitoring and Evaluation from 2pm to 4pm. And to this program William Kamundi and Rhoda have shown interest and volunteered themselves working with me in this program and probably shall continue themselves later. BUT, need also to consider them on this particular effort they are to take although volunteering. I think of k500 a month each as an appreciation too. HOW DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT THIS TOO? Lets share ideas. And the plan is to continue fully next week.

CBO MANAGEMENT/ UMODZI

UMODZI MAIZE GARDEN: Seems wont harvest much because of the dry spell which most farmers are experiencing too.

PETER AND E/C LAND CONTROVERSIAL: E/C and other member were preparing Herbal garden piece of land for the benefit of the children E/C, other committees and the entire community, just next to project garden with a help from DAPP Officers who knows much about Herbs and oriented the E/C and other members before this point. My friends, Peter was not happy and met the Chairman and told them to stop using his land like that and that EC should not forget that the land and everything on it belongs to him and should stop immediately. And has a letter from the T/A about the land issues belonging to him and that in October everything will be handed over to him. He said if the members will continue they will all die. So much was been said as you all know him. HE reported to me like that, Mr. Kasowanjete CBOs CHAIRMAN. And all members were disappointed and discouraged. And suggested to meet the DC and SWO about all this through boNGO. BUT in the first place they said us boNGO should do the follow-up for them. And I said WHY, HOW? NEED TO STAND UP YOURSELF NOT boNGO anymore. Right now I have booked an appointment for them to meet the SWO and the DC. And Mrs. Ndaipalero SWO suggest  that they should write a letter on their own hand writing/ stamp it to the DC through SWO and boNGO( PARTNER IN DEVELOPMENT) expressing how things are on the ground as to regard to land issues and how involved are the chiefs in it and the recent issues happened. And that they need an URGENT INTERVENTION OF THE DC/ SWO. And they have to bring it along to the DC /SWO next week (wk17). SWO/ E/C, boNGO will thereafter meet the DC. That’s anew approach contrary to first one. WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

E/C AND MR GAZALINA: E/C were not happy with the robbery and burglary happening at the project house while he is there to make this not to happen. And think that there must be good relationship with Peter along to what is happening and thought using the same funds to employee two guards, day and night while also doing other jobs around the house and would only use k6,000 for both guards, day and night, And if Mr Gazalina wants to continue, then its under this new review to save and enhance security, but actually they did not want MrGAZALINA to continue working in this regard but employee two new ones. After discussions between E/C and MrGazalina, thought to include him in the new setup the E/C think and will just get one more but under full control of E/C not boNGO anymore, which was a good idea to the part of boNGO and that is an initiative we need from the community. And Mr Gazalina has been given 1 month notice of May, and later E/C will take it on. LETS HOPE THIS WILL NOT BRING YET ANOTHER PROBLEM.

7. CBO MANAGEMENT/ RESEARCH FEEDBACK TIYENDE PAMODZI

Looked at how was the research/ positive and negative, what would do and not do, why? Who would involve and not and why? Which design they like, why? Not like why?

MALAVIDAPP CENTRE

-          Community involvement /participation/ management, Centre ideas, designs and even centre construction was entirely done and in hands of DAPP, they feel no community ownership in the end as far as sustainability is concerned and would not want to go that way. BUT they like the design of the centre because its long last and be involved, participate; manage etc themselves in the process.

NTENJE COMMUNITY CENTRE/ GRASS THATCHED

Entirely owned, managed etc by the local community and school activities are going on well. BUT lack skills and knowledge to give quality care and education and after describing what boNGO does, showed interest to join to improve the skills and knowledge. DID NOT PROMISE, BUT WILL COME BACK TO THEM LATER. Tiyende appreciated for their efforts, commitments, ideas and that, they are encouraged so much. BUT said that they also face challenges like, food, teachers salary, maintain ace of the centre 3 time a year a big problem, of which they think of finding donors to construct them an iron roofed centre so that the community would also find enough time to work for their families other than thinking of the centre, most of the times for maintenance, the same challenge faced by Makungula SAFE ECD in Zomba. NEED CONCRET JUSTFICATION, BUT these are their ideas.

It was an open discussion and was good to see many contributions and to see also what would they want to come up with, boNGO has not come up with ideas yet because the purpose of these research is to enable the committee appreciate the efforts of their friends out there, learn, inspire, experience, get knowledge and skills and probably use them in their own way. From what I observe of the 3 trips of the research, I here comment of structure designs like of Chinansungwi and this time DAAP, iron roofed centres. MY OBSERVATIONS MAY BE WRONG/RIGHT. But also boNGO wont force them to go by our way but late them know much, share, get much infor, etc about the things, and see where will take us to.

The next step is to go for the last research in Liwonde, if our request wiil be accepted by our friends that side. We are still communicating with our friends that side.

And in the end will meet the relevant stake holders, Chrissie for instance to share all these feedback from the CBO Management.

We shall see where that will that take us to.

Weeks 15-16 2008

POF/ECD:

It was all about boNGO POF/ECD training planning and logistics, which includes material mobilization and delivery, sending out invitations to all participants and other stakeholders, following and few manuals productions for some new teachers and schools.

It was very fine and I was proud to see that by Friday and Saturday everything was in place in readiness for the training and that everybody was looking forward to this awaited training which will enable and encourage the teachers to give out quality education and care to the children.

PARTICIPANTS:  8 Umodzi Teachers, 12 Tiyende Pamodzi Centers, 19 plus Training teachers,

                            1 boNGO POF/ECD Facilitator, 2 APPM Representative, 1SOW Representative

2 EC Members, Mr Kasowanjete and Semu (guests on closing day).

FIRST QUARTER boNGO POF/ECD TRAINING (MANUAL EVALUATION)

In this training participants and facilitators were looking at:

boNGO POF/ECD program background and its introduction

What has already been done so far and how?

Where are we now in this boNGO POF/ECD program?

Where do we want to go?

How do we get there/ which we had to do the evaluation of the manual from the point of:

-       Day program

-       Introduction of the week

-       Research/ kafukufuku

-       Numbers and Alphabet

-       English and shapes

-       Health and well 1 and 2

-       Story telling and ways of teaching

And the participants were looking at what is working and not working, when teaching, playing, planning and the implementation in general. (Positive, negative and additional ideas/ suggestion/way forward) example, content, instructions, use of words, editing/ translation, time/ period, use of examples, use of ideas and general understanding of the first quarter of the manual.

HOW? Participants were working in groups of 8 each and were looking at a specific topic to discuss, share experiences and challenges, come up with additional ideas/ suggestions/ comments etc at the end of it looking at all the areas to be covered in the evaluation system. And had to start by going through (reading) each topic in order to encourage each one to take part and understand.

OUTCOME

-       Able to change some words usage to suit children most.

-       Day program usage should not be a restriction to schools, but be according to CBCCs daily structure, example, if a school does not provide food to the children and that the teachers are all volunteers therefore should go back home earlier to do home work for survival, then knocks at 10am/11am. But the content, instructions etc its fine. Its all to the teachers, but to follow POF/ECD IDEAS

-       Able to come up with many songs, poems, dances, games in each of the topics covered, it was very incredible about these.

-       Able to interact/ share experiences and challenges etc with new members and themselves.

-       Able to produce at least durable and more materials ever for their cbccs and was another good time for interaction especially new teachers.

-       Able to be reminded by APPM and SWO on other good practices in delivering quality education and car.

WAY FORWARD

-       Able to see the way forward, example compilation of all changes in the manual for the first quarter

-       Develop Monitoring and Evaluation system within the boNGO POF/ECD program teachers as to ensure that members are trying all ideas in POF and that they really understand and be encouraged to read and understand the manual for them to full contribute to the evaluation of this important manual. BoNGO and Umodzi Teachers will work into the development of this, and later inform others. Need to think more on this but it’s a good idea.

-       Looked at topics which will be covered in the second quarter and encourage them really to try ideas fully.

CHALLENGE;

-       Need to encourage the teachers more through monitoring and evaluation, because it has             been observed that only teachers from Umodzi and Mango and few others contributed a lot to this training and seemed that they are the ones who are trying in implementing POF ideas.

-       How best we can monitor and evaluate other all POF teachers/cbccs in order to have common understanding and be able to contribute to the evaluation of our manual. And some ideas have already been thought of, of developing M and E within the teachers themselves. HOW? Will look at it and share.

-       It showed that other cbccs are working in isolation not involving parents at the grassroots. And this does not encourage teachers to put extra effort in delivering services to children because there is no an immediate supervision.

-       Had little time to fully cover/ analyze issues in POF beyond.

FACILITATOR COMMENT:

It was a very successful, positive, wonderful training moments so far, looking at the participation, efforts to come up with ideas for the first time, comments, and suggestion among others to the evaluation of this manual. Although I think had little time to actually look critically/ beyond to analyze issues in POF. And I do think that if we continue to encourage them in one way or the other, then next time will have more to add to the manual and look beyond than this last time.

And this has also been shared with my colleagues from APPM/SWO.

I enjoyed it very much as always, although tiresome, that’s all about work.

Had a closing celemony, teachers do play songs, dramas, games was fantastic to say good by to fellows and boNGO, songs/ poems of encouraging boNGO IN WORKING WITH THEM AND SUPPORT THEM. Some songs too from ELUBE/ AIDA with their daughters, I invited them for this.

Had also journalists from daily time and nation news papers for coverage. They spoke to David, Justin and William on behalf of all participants.

PARTICIPANT COMMENT AT THE END (PERSONAL EVALUATION ABOUT THE TRAINING)

ELIAS MONJEZA

It was a great idea to do the evaluation, because this has encouraged me and  others to put extra efforts in implementing POF ideas, help us to change areas we felt not good and able to interact, share experiences and challenges, which will make all of us to give quality education and care to the children. He said the organization was really good, BUT asked boNGO Directors to consider food allowance to mk350 from mk250. (Food for thought)

THINK OF YOU ALL FRIENDS, WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST

Week 14 2008

MULUBWANJI ANZANGA NONSE?

WHAT HAS HAPPENED THROUGHOUT THE WEEK?

1. CBO Management- Umodzi Mbame EC, what was discussed.

1. Plans for the next weeks i.e., to finish clearing the school place/ actually done already on Friday.

2. Meeting parents before kids come back from holiday regarding contribution, participation and     encouraging each other.

3. Reconsider their IGA position, immediate wants to go for (WATERPUMP rentals) because they have found already the market for that i.e. some clubs within the area always cries for water pump to irrigate their gardens. And later use it for their own garden yet to be established. Asked boNGO to purchase the WATER PUMP as a loan to them and will be paying them through their savings each month and probably also when they start generating their own money once this comes to effect.

Told them that boNGO does not have much trust in you as EC and would actually wants you start saving more and we shall consider later. I doubt about it, because they are failing to administer the current materials on rental basis as well. Kasowanjete, ooh, this is water pump mind you, said so what about it? He said they will.  Said Mabodza, always its him talking about water pump

4.  Supervise their garden, if they actually will harvest more or less because there was dry spell that has affected most of the farmer’s crops here.

2. Research tour to Chiradzulu

We visited two centers, one initiated by dapp and the other one was the community pre-preschool called Mtenje in PIM area, hope you know these community pre-schools.

We were 10 in total and was a learning process as well to community members too, know how one centre is different from the other one, why? How they want to do different? Why? All these were been learned out of this trip and every body was satisfied I think, looking at the responses and question they put up.

Arranged to have the group feed back/ evaluation in kantimbanya next of next week after the teachers training training and see the forward. We may have one more trip or just share the information/ideas we have with relevant stakeholders for decision making

Material Collection and Delivery/ donation

Got the materials from peoples Supper market and educational books and calendars from PSI Malawi and were delivered in preparations for the training from 7th April, 2008 And education materials for our resource center and the club children yet to be starting.

And will have another delivery Thursday for more materials for the training as well.

Training preparations

All the preparation are going on well, involving our teachers too. SWO confirmed their participation and are yet to tell us other details of what they are going to do, not yet from APPM.

NEXT WEEK PLANS

Continue mobilizing and delivery of training materials

. Meeting the teachers in readiness for the training and share the  responsibilities

Final preparation/ Documenting and production of some materials for the training

boNGO meeting/ Partners meeting i.e. Feed the Children staff etc

POF/ECD

Monitoring and evaluation at both Umodzi –Mbame and Mango Early Childhood Development Centers, where assessment activities were taking place.

Closure of Mango early childhood development centre on Wednesday where parents, volunteers were present and teachers shared the assessment activities with the parents and others too. There were 32 people who came to attend the function, including 2 Amfumu and GVH Kantimbanya and was good as to the comments from the parents, volunteers, GVH

Gvh encourages people to send their children to pre-school to prepare them for the primary school and support teachers and volunteers in daily activities of the school

Closure of Umodzi-Mbame early childhood development centre on Thursday, where there was a big gathering of people attending and eager to get to know how their children have been doing in the first term of the school through the assessment prepared. The invited people include, Amfumu, EC, School committee, parents others too. And the total attendance was 61. We had our usual POF/ECD activities in 4 classes, POF/ECD guided free play (include games and sports together), teachers sharing assessment notes with parents, EC, School Committee etc, Gathering for various speeches i.e., teachers, EC, School Committee, parents, Amfumu, boNGO and others too.

PERSONAL COMMENTS

It was rather a wonderful time to see teachers interacting/ share/ discuss with parents fully regarding their children’s performances/ assessments and share way forward together. Even the comments from the parents were encouraging to both teachers, EC, School committee, boNGO. One parent went to say, time has come to realize the importance of our own school here and support each other in the affairs of this school, be responsible and take part. (Mother to Alinafe Mahara) And were lots of encouraging words as well from the EC, School Committee and Amfumu too. We will see more in the next term possibly.

CBO MANAGEMENT MEETING

In the afternoon of this Thursday had the meeting with the EC, to inform them about the next plan of boNGO in the weeks to come, which include, the 5day POF/ECD teachers training on the 7th of April, 2008 and here also their plan in the next weeks as well and say they will meet for planning on Monday 24th of March.

They also appreciated the way how the function was organized and thought this should be a routine of events, in order for the parents to appreciate the efforts by teachers and get their comments, which will enhance the working relationship.

NEXT WEEK PLAN

1. Meeting EC, get their plans. (Cbo management)

2. Research tour with Tiyende Pamodzi CBO Management in Chiradzulu on Wednesday 26th of March.

Week 12 2008

QUICK UPDATE WEEK 12, MARCH, 2008

  1. Monitoring and evaluation at Umodzi and Mango cbcc on POF/ ECD ideas implementation. At Umodzi, teachers are assessing children as to regard to what they have covered so far in the first term of the school year and are yet to share with the parents next week Thursday when closing the school term. This will help children-Teacher-Parent interaction, encouragement and promote good working relationship with the parents etc.

At Mango, am really involved in all class activities undertaken there when I go there, other than only monitoring. Still trying to make teachers understand the importance of exploring and trying more ideas regarding POF/ECD. They were still far in as far as POF/ECD ideas implementation is concerned. But am pride that it’s coming up well now and things are changing for the better. And they will also have an assessment for only the highest kids or big kids, according to the meeting we have had. They are closing on Wednesday.

  1. Business Monitoring and evaluation with Tiyende Pamodzi CBO Management Committee.

-Managed to bank some money amounting to mk9, 000, month of February.

-There is good working relationship and trust within members

-In the month of January and February managed to appreciate all Teachers and gave each centre some money for the purchase of food and other things.

- Snow link engineers come to check the maize mill and meet the executive to here if there problems and worked on them as there warrant time is elapsing. It was a good gesture. Challenge, low season for the business, but from April on will be ok.

  1. Trip to Zomba (Makungula Early Childhood Development Centre)

, which was a successful one, in the sense that,

-          Teachers interacted with their friends

-          See for themselves how possible POF/ ECD ideas are implemented

-          Appreciate the effort taken to care and give quality education to children

-          Share challenges, vision, skills, encouragements and experiences

-          And beyond that, it’s networking and establishes good working relationship.

In the end POF teachers said, have learned a lot on this trip and thanked boNGO for facilitating this trip to zomba and are being encouraged so much, and promised to implement what they have seen/ learned good. Infact, Blessings and Mai Chatsama said have never thought they shall visit Zomba in their life, especially this kind of education visit. We had 14 teachers from both Tiyende Pamodzi and Umodzi-Mbame CBOs. And their executive members appreciated for the trip because were told before about this trip.

  1. Met also the UNICEF officials from Finland at Makungula who came for a visit and discuss the way forward regarding the centre, wants to maintain it , roof it with iron sheets etc. more to this later.

Week 11 2008

POF/ECD

  1. Monitoring and evaluation to both Umodzi-Mbame and Mango cbcc whereby progress on the implementation of POF ideas is taking its way and more at Umodzi as we now have supporters.

  2. Enrolment at umodzi cbcc now has increased to 78 children and attendance is always within 70s and has all 4 classes in full operation each day and mango cbcc is at 60 but average attendance is at 50.

  3. Motoring and evaluation on Thursday accompanied with Ester (SWO) to appreciate the implementation of POF ideas and ECD in general and the feed back was positive, especially the supporting system but emphasized to the parents who come to cook to observe more on hygienic and health issues at the school.

  4. Got the rice donation of about 0.5 tones (9bags of 50kgs rice each) from the Feed the children Malawi, which I distributed on Friday to Umodzi-mbame (CBO) centre (3bags) and all 4 centers in Tiyende pamodzi CBO (6bags) respectively. Hired a 3toner car for the distribution.

Very fantastic moments for I and boNGO just after David left. (WONDERFUL)

  1. Planned with teachers to visit Makungula cbcc SAFE in Zomba on Friday next week 14 of March, 2008( 8 teachers from umodzi, 2 from mango, 1 each from masuku, ntayamwana and chimwavi respectively and this is already confirmed with our colleagues in Zomba. And later shall visit Kuunika Foundation.

CBO MANAGEMENT

1.      Umodzi- Mbame E/C complained of over budget each month this time around that, they have more kids and extra 4 teachers. Therefore came up with a new monthly budget of about k25, 000 each month.

Breakdown as follows: 2bags rice x k2500 each     = k5, 000

                                    2bales sugar xk2500 each   = k5, 000

                                         Teacher’s salaries:               = k12, 000

                                          Others                                   = k3, 000

                                                                                       Mk25, 000

An increase of k8000 from the previous running cost they used to receive

And I need to do a research on the cost of these items before giving them the feedback. And emphasized on the importance of having an IGA to this regard.

Executive committee will soon embark on IGA activity which they identified last month on the similar CBO MEETING and its farming or gardening, production of veg, tomatoes, onions name it. (Our chairman’s complements kasowanjete)

I shared with them again to be on the forefront (themselves) not boNGO and we are yet to see what they can do.

boNGO ADMINITRATION

  1. boNGO registration is almost through, covering letter, certificate printed already at the registrar level, this is completely done and I saw it with my eyes too. But need to be sent to the Minister to approve it and be signed, which always takes time; you all know how Gvt works here, very slow. And I suggested if I can go to the ministry’s head office in Lilongwe myself. They are happy with the idea and ok and will meet them on Monday for this issue again, so that I may go with our file. I even saw documents from 2005/6 still be there without been sent to the minister yet.

  2. Met Chagwamjira (OURLAWYER/TRUSTEE) regarding legal matters which attracts k10, 000 contribution fees per year and have boNGO as their true client and i told them to wait until we are fully registered as boNGO and he appreciated for the FACT, comment/idea I came up with. As per their request.

  3. Meeting with DAPP officers regarding work partnership on herbal gardens and HIV/AIDS awareness lessons at umodzi CBO, to CBO beneficiaries and others too. And agreed to come up with work plan for that and share it with E/C on the next meeting on the 13th March 2008. In this regard Erube has already shown interest and has already herbal garden at her home which will be an example to others who will show interest

  4. I take the risk to schedule boNGO Forum to be on the 5th April 2008 and Chris will provide us a place at Glass House. I communicated to Poky about this already. Please David you can take it from there to inform others.

NOTE: Pre-school education will end on the 21 0r 28th of March. And I have planned with the teachers to do assessment to all children and keep the records. And later call individual parent for briefing and way forward. This will help the teachers to interact/ share with the parents and see kid’s way forward regarding, discipline, etc within the remaining weeks.
